Cultural significance

Pink's cultural meaning has shifted dramatically over centuries. In 18th-century Europe, pink was a masculine color — boys wore pink as a 'lighter red' signaling strength. The gender association flipped in the mid-20th century through marketing. In Japan, pink (momoiro/pinku) is deeply tied to cherry blossom season (hanami) and represents transient beauty, a core concept in Japanese aesthetics (mono no aware). In India, the city of Jaipur is called the 'Pink City' after Maharaja Ram Singh painted it pink to welcome Prince Albert in 1876. Baker-Miller Pink, a specific shade, has been studied for its calming physiological effects.

Japanese ·
